Introducing the idea of the world map and the ability to fly, SMB 3 really helped to make the Mario series what it is today!

It was released on the Wii's Virtual Console service in the UK on November 9th.

World 1: basic
World 2: desert hills
World 3: Sealand
World 4: Big Island
World 5: Frostyland
World 6: flower place
world 7:Pipeland
World 8: Bowser's castle

Super Mario Bros.

The original (and best?). Not only will you be needing the lives you get (one more for every 50), but you will be using Star Bits in the Comet Observatory itself to feed the hungry Lumas.

2) Look around you as much as possible. Use the Remote's D-pad to switch camera angles. You never know what you might find!

3) You should open up Ghostly Galaxy and complete its first mission as soon as you can. This will free Luigi, who can then go and find some of the precious Power Stars. Well, that's the plan - what he ends up doing is getting a Power Star and getting trapped. He will send the Mail Toad a note and a picture for Mario, telling you where he is. It is then up to the player to find him and collect the Power Star.

4) Similarly, completing the game (i.e. defeating Bowser) should be a priority for those who want to collect all 121 Power Stars. That allows the Purple Comet to start roaming the galaxies. The Purple Comet gives a challenge - in very Donkey Kong 64 fashion - for Mario to collect a hundred purple coins, upon which he will receive a Power Star.

5) Once you have the first three stars from any (large) galaxy, the next time you go in there will be a question mark over one of the stars. That means there's a secret Power Star in that mission somewhere.

New Super Mario Bros.

Back to his humble 2D roots after a gap of around fifteen years with the DS title New Super Mario Bros. Innovations this time include the Mega Mushroom, which makes Mario triple in size and walk through (almost) anything in his path, and the Mini Mushroom, which - as its name suggests! - shrinks Mario right down and gives him access to whole new areas...

Below are links to all the different worlds in the game. Jump over the log. You are heading for the Question Mark Coin - collect it to make the Honey Mushroom appear. Head left and drop down. You should be able to see the Honey Mushroom once the camera pans round: collect it. You are now Bee Mario for the first time!

Practice using him before you move on. The best tactic is to tap the jump button to hover, rather than keep it held down (unless that's absolutely necessary). At any rate, head back to where you got the Question Mark Coin - avoiding the water, which will cause you to lose the Bee Suit! Jump onto the ledge behind the waterfall. Pass the insects and drop down the hole at the end of the passage. You will land on a slide.

Slide down. Head left and hover over the high ledge. Keep going left until the Launch Star. Use it.

Go forward on the lilypads. Once you get to the far side head right and go towards the left-most flower. Jump on its stem, shake the Remote and land on the flowers higher up. Move forward until you see the shadow of a Launch Star. Hover up to it and use it.

You are so close! To climb up this final part, jump on the yellow hexagons. Keep heading upwards and you'll emerge with a ledge to your left. Jump onto it. Kill the Piranha Plant there, and it will turn into a vine. Climb up the vine.

The Queen Bee asks you to stop her itchiness, which turns out to be 5 Star Chips in her fur! Jump onto her body. There is 1 Star Chip on her front, 1 on her lower right side, 1 on her upper back, 1 on her lower back and 1 on her lower right side. Once you've collected them all, drop off her body and head behind her to the Launch Star. Use it.

Approach the Toad with the miner's helmet and he will give you a Power Star.

Once you have collected this Power Star, the Toads set up home in the Garage of the Comet Observatory.

SMG Loopdeeloop Galaxy

This galaxy opens up once the player has 5 stars total.

SMG Good Egg Galaxy - King Kaliente's Battle Fleet

Head to the underside of the first planet. Walk round until you see the orange pipe. Jump on top of it to go down. Use the ramps to get to the ? coin, which will leave a trail of notes behind it. Collect all the notes for a 1-Up mushroom. Head through the orange pipe on the ceiling to emerge on top of the house that you face when you first arrive in the level. Use the Launch Star just above you.

Smash the crystal containing the Toad on the next planet - he reveals that the green balls are supposed to be coconuts(!). Spin the coconuts into the spiky enemies and one of them will turn into a small Launch Star. Use it to get to the nearby planet.

There's a Pokey on this planet: spin a coconut into him and he'll fall apart. Jump on his head and he'll turn into a Launch Star.

You land in a small Launch Star - use it.

Move onto the top of the planet and head upwards. Smash the crystal, which will reveals a Launch Star. Use it. You're now at the Battle Fleet of the title!

Two enemies will fire coconuts at you from the ship immediately in front of you. Spin into the coconuts and they will fly back at the enemies, destroying them. This lowers a bridge to that other ship. Head over and to the right. Smashing the crystal you find reveals a Launch Star. Use it.

Move round to the top of the planet to meet King Kaliente. Avoid his fireballs, which are red, and spin his coconuts back at him (they're green). After the first hit, he will start to reflect the coconuts back at you - get into position and spin them back at him, as many times as you need to. After 3 hits total, he's beaten. Move round the planet to the Power Star and collect it!

SMG Good Egg Galaxy - A Snack Of Cosmic Proportions

You must collect lots of Star Bits for one part of this challenge. Run through the plants near to your start position to free Star Bits. Spin into the enemies near the house and they'll turn into Star Bits. Go to the underside of that first planet and get them from the trees, as well as that Question Mark brick. When you have around 50 Star Bits, it's time to move on. Go back to your start position and get on to the right-hand bridge. Keep moving and you should meet a blue Luma, who will tell you you need a lot of Star Bits in the near future! It will turn into some blue Pull Stars, so use them and get up to the Launch Star. Use that.

Keep picking up Star Bits on the next planet. One of the crystals contains the Launch Star, so spin into it to free the Launch Star and use it.

The next planet has pretty much the same set-up, so find the appropriate crystal and use the Launch Star.

This planet has a hungry Luma on it. Now, the first time I played through this level it asked for 50 Star Bits. The next time I played it, knowing it wanted loads of Star Bits, I collected loads... and then it wanted 100. Speak to it and if you do not have enough Star Bits you can use the Launch Stars to go back to other planets and collect more. Once you have enough, feed the Luma and it will transform into a planet! Use the Launch Star it leaves behind to head over there.

You have to climb to the top. At one stage there are red spiky enemies surrounding a 1-Up: spin into the nearby green ball to get them out of the way. Use Wall Kicks to collect it. Once at the top, use the Launch Star to be sent to the glass capsule.

Move round the capsule and smash all the crystals that you see. One of them leaves a hole to the interior: drop inside and the game turns 2D briefly. Head right and watch for the arrows on the walls: they will tell you which way the gravity is pulling. At one point you will be stuck to the ceiling with a couple of raising/lowering platforms: wait until they have fully raised into the ceiling before moving on. Keep going right until you fall upwards (!). Grab the 1-Up to the right before heading back left. You should soon be able to get to the top. Use the Launch Star.

Blue Star Chips are the order of the day. 3 of the 5 should be immediately visible, so grab them. Head to the underside of the planet and you should see the next 2. Get them and 5 Pull Stars will appear. Use them to swing yourself round into the Power Star.

SMG Good Egg Galaxy

The first of all the galaxies to open itself to the player. Keep going forwards, past the Goomba. You should meet a Luma who transforms to enable you to get the Launch Star.

On the next planet you must collect the Star Chips. It's shaped like a sideways 8 and there are two Star Chips on the side of the 8 that you've landed on. There are two more in the rut between the two spheres, and the last one is on the opposite sphere from where you start. Use the Launch Star.

The next planet features a Piranha Plant. Spin into it to kill it, and a vine pops out. Jump onto it and spin the Remote to get to the next planet.

This planet is a hollow shell, so avoid falling! Head up and then left, avoiding the boulders. Keep going until you find and pass the source of the boulders. You will meet a large purple Piranha Plant. Spin into one of the green balls around the creature and you should kill it. It turns into a vine. Grab it and spin.

Head onto the top of the next planet and climb the small concrete block tower. Spin into the crystals at the top to release the Launch Star. Use it to get to the boss!

You land on a large egg, which cracks. What looks like a tail emerges: spin into the tail, and the egg shell shatters. It's the Dino Piranha! Run in circles behind him and spin into his tail. Repeat this 3 times to beat him. Collect the Power Star.
